Avian Flu Panic

I really think this is getting out of hand. While disaster preparedness is a good thing, enacting new laws and regulations on the fly strikes me as a very bad idea. There is scant evidence that the avian flu is easily transferrable to humans, and there is historical evidence that given time our avian friends would build up immunity to the current flu.

Following the imposition of a temporary one-month ban on live bird imports in the European Union, bird fairs, markets and shows will also be banned, except where local risk assessments show they can go ahead safely.

The possibility of instructing poultry farmers to bring free range chickens indoors is being urgently discussed by ministers with the industry and a register of commercial poultry producers will be established, Environment Secretary Margaret Beckett said.

Smells like panic to me.
